Try telling that to the science department! You should've seen how we used to ague about whether the Metric or Customary was better (the latter, obviously). They didn't care in the least to preserve a system that had its roots in Biblical times [heck, that's probrably the reason they wanted to destroy it].

Being an Anglophile, you'd be interested to know that the English yard was originally measured from King Henry I, a ruler known for sound economic policies and other goodies.
